Tracing its historical roots back to a weekly publication founded in 1858, the contemporary newspaper took shape in 1937 following the merger of The Record-Republican and The Washington C.H. Herald. In August 2025, the publication adapted to rising production costs by transitioning its physical layout into a combined 32-page regional print edition called The Connector—partnering alongside the Wilmington News Journal and the Hillsboro Times-Gazette—while maintaining its own fully independent, hyper-local digital news site.
